The Club was founded in 1993 by Rupert Hoogewerf – now known famously all over China as Hurun for his China Rich List of Billionaires. Initially named 'China Tuesdays' the original group consisted of friends and Chinese graduates from the University of Durham who met regularly to keep abreast of the enormous changes in China in the early 1990's.

In 1997, H-J Colston, herself a graduate from Durham and one of the original group, returned from working in China along with Theresa Booth, entrepreneur and environmentalist. These two ladies took over the management and direction of the Club and re-named it the Chopsticks Club to represent not only the Chinese focus of the Club but also to capture the essence of the monthly events that involve Chinese food and networking.

The Club encourages open debate and discussion and is sensitive to the opinions of others. It has held a number of debates including "Should Beijing host the Olympic Games?" held in 2001; "China: its economic growth and environmental impact" and "Is it really possible to make money in China?" More recently a panel of Chinese members gave a Chinese perspective on the Tibet incident in 2008 and the subsequent coverage in the Western media.

The Club is entirely voluntarily run and is non political. It aims to promote greater understanding between Chinese and British people through a genuine community. It encourages and supports business links amongst its members.

Over the past 15 years the Club has grown into a community of people hungry to understand China. It has taken over the social events of the Great Britain China Centre and has close links with many of the China-related organisations in London.

The Club has run free mandarin classes in the City of London for more than five years in the knowledge that the Chinese language will become increasingly important for bilateral trade and engagement.
