Chopsticks Business

Chopsticks Club's latest initiative is to develop a number of topical and niche industry events relating to China in collaboration with other key partners. These events are aimed at companies with business interests operations in China and will offer high value, educational content as well as provide invaluable opportunities for in-depth discussion and networking.

These events will complement the monthly Chopsticks dinner/speaker events.

Chopsticks Business, Schmittzehe & Partners China Advisory and Chatham House are hosting a series of three panel discussion events in 2009 aimed at the business community to provide insight into what is happening in China and what businesses can expect. In other words, how can UK Plc prepare itself strategically to be an attractive partner for China over the months and years ahead? What is the Stimulus Package? How will Chinese companies go global? How can companies prepare themselves for shifts in consumption patterns? How UK Plc reacts, responds and engages with China during this recession will be critical. These events will provide

  • insights into what is happening on the ground and
  • prepare businesses for what they can expect next

Details of discussion topics and panellists are given in the table below.

China and the Global Financial Crisis: panel-led series of events

The impact of the current financial crisis is currently far more tangible in western economies than it is in China. Nevertheless, China is not exempt from the economic fall-out. How China responds to, and manages the economic situation as it effects China, will be significant for shaping, not only its future destiny, but the future world order. How will it engage with its global trading partners? What will the Chinese government's Stimulus Package do to sustain domestic, economic and social stability? What trends will emerge in both domestic consumption and global ambitions?

PREVIOUS EVENTS IN THE SERIES

China's Stimulus Package: what is it and how can UK Plc take advantage of the opportunities? 03 June 2009

China-focused, senior executives from various industry sectors, were given value for money on 03 June when they heard from three expert and well-informed panellists about China's Stimulus Package. Hailed as "a triumph!" by one happy attendee, the panel, including Jeremy Gordon (UK Trade & Investment); Gareth Leather (Economist Intelligence Unit) and Dr Alex Mackinnon (co-author of "China Calling: a Foot in the Global Door") gave an overview of the Stimulus Package from various angles, including the geographical emphasis and the likely sectors to benefit. The key of the discussion was to establish where UK businesses might have a chance to win projects.

One attendee said in summary of the event that "it is lucky to attend an event where one member of the panel is good, but to have three excellent speakers is very rare!" Another said "I learnt a great deal - it was very interesting!"
