13 September 2011, was a unique event for the Chopsticks Club. Although the Club runs regular monthly dinner / speaker events, the Moon Festival marked the 10th Anniversary of the Club's Mandarin Sessions. To celebrate this landmark, the Club chose to host their event using mandarin as the official language of the night. Club members and friends were encouraged in their learning and the informal speaking competition inspired many.
Esuna Dugarova, a Russian Club member, won first place for her presentation about her homeland Buryatia located in eastern Siberia near Lake Baikal, its history and traditions, accompanied by a visual presentation. Bernie Meadows, founder member of the Club and regular Practice Session attendee since January 2002, took second place talking about the value of the mandarin classes and why he decided to study Chinese.
The atmosphere of the evening was “buzzing” and guests enjoyed enchanting Moon Festival musical performances from Club member and professional singer, Wang Chen, and a performance troupe from the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine from the South Bank University.
Ms Zhu Li endorses the promotion of mandarin learning
Representing the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy,Ms Zhu Li, endorsed the work of the Club in promoting the Chinese language and bi-lateral relations, with an engaging speech that spoke of China’s rise and the corresponding importance of the skill of speaking and understanding mandarin. China would like to see more Brits going to study in China and will organise a Study in China Event in October. | We are grateful to Ms Li Ting from the London Representative Office of the Hanban and Mr Yan Tong from L2 Language & Cultural Services for acting as independent judges on the panel alongside Ms Zhu Li in judging the competitors of the speaking competition. All three commended the level of competency of the speakers. |
The Chopsticks Club Mandarin Practice is the most established and successful Mandarin speaking group in London. It provides a stimulating environment for all levels of participants. Sessions take place EVERY OTHER WEDNESDAY EVENING from 18.30 to approximately 21.00 in Central London.
